Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME – “SUPER BOWL SUNDAY!”

Today is Super Bowl Sunday for many Americans who will be watching the football
championship game. In Mark’s gospel today, we hear that Jesus was having a Super Sunday as he
healed every sick person who came to his door in Capernaum. Jesus sort of ran up the score against evil
by driving out many demons, too. Besides all of this heroic action in his adopted hometown, Jesus did
not know when to quit as he went on the road to preach in all of the nearby villages where he kept his
winning streak alive by driving out the demons throughout the whole of Galilee. What a super
champion!

In this endless time of the coronavirus pandemic, we need a super healer. We are counting on
the vaccines to win out over this insidious illness. In the meantime, our Lord Jesus continues to be
victorious over sin and death for the sake of all of us, his devoted fans. Do we celebrate that our Savior
can and will help us defeat the evil of sin (worse than a coronavirus) in our life and then give us the
championship trophy of eternal happiness with him at the end of our earthly season?

“SOUPER BOWL” COLLECTION FOR OUR SVdeP SOCIETY
Today at church we are continuing a tradition of our parish by collecting in large soup pots
money for our St. Vincent de Paul to help the needy in our neighborhood with food vouchers. You can
add to the “soup” in the pot by making an offering after Mass at the church exits. Also as you enjoy your
snacks or beverages during the Super Bowl today, maybe say an extra prayer for the homeless and
hungry in our own community. Besides your generosity, prayer helps them in a very real way, too.

SOMETHING NEW IN OUR CHURCH “CORNER ROOM”

– A “LEARN AND RETURN” LIBRARY OF CD’S &DVD’S

I just found a box in my storeroom filled with sets of CD’s and DVD’s on topics that might be of
interest to some parish members. So I thought I would make them available to be used rather than just
collecting dust, after having used them myself. They will be on display in the “Corner Room”, the
miscellaneous room to the right as you come in the front doors of church. Some of the CD’s are on
scripture, the Mass, spirituality, history, and even about classical music. You can listen to these at home
or in your car while driving. The DVD’s are series of presentations on biblical Israel and Jerusalem, a
series on Holiness by Bishop Barron, several series on history, and several other topics.
So I just ask that you borrow a set for home and hopefully learn something important or at least
interesting for you, and then return them to the “Corner Room” for the next person. So let’s call this
process – “Learn and Return”.

ALSO IN THE “CORNER ROOM” – A BOOK LIBRARY
For a while Sister Ruth has been making available a good variety of spiritual and religious books
in our “Corner Room” for use by our parish members. Just come in and browse around for some
spiritual reading to take home; after you are properly inspired, please return the book for the next
person. Remember: “Learn and Return”.
